Kitui County is putting Shs3 million to a search for a tourist ambassador to market the country as a tourist destination. Tourism executive Peter Nkunda said the new Kitui tourism ambassador will be picked during the Miss Kitui County Beauty Pageant, whose finals will be held in the Kitui Ithookwe Showground on December 17, 2016.
Auditions to pick two competitors from each of the eight sub-counties will be held on December 9 and 10, 2016
Kitui County has a number of potential tourist attractions which have for many years remained unexploited. The main attractions in Kitui County include Tsavo East National Park in Mutomo, South Kitui National Reserve, Mwingi National Reserve, Nzambani Rock, Ikoo Valley and Ngomeni Rock Catchment and Conservancy.
Tsavo East National Park
Tsavo East, lies to the east of the Nairobi –Mombasa road, equidistant between Nairobi and Mombasa, and offers a vast and untapped arena of arid bush.
South Kitui National Reserve
It was inaugurated in 1979 with an area of 1833km. It comprises of thickets, grasslands and acacia savannah. It is a wildlife dispersal area for Tsavo National Park and is well known for the animals that relocate to and from Tsavo National Park.
Mwingi National Reserve
The 745sq.km Mwingi National Reserve is one of the four protected and adjoining areas that comprise the 4,400 square km Meru Conservational Area (MCA). The other three are Meru National Park, Bisanadi National Reserve and Kora National Park.
