A sprawling ultramodern mall and estate, Crystal Rivers, will soon grace the land scape of Athi River in Machakos County.
Safaricom Staff Pension Scheme, owners of the project, said the mall is expected to be complete in early 2018 while the two-phase gated residential estate is expected to be completed by 2020. The cost of the project is estimated at Sh4.5 billion
Crystal Rivers will sit on 25.5 acres and it will include a 20,000-square-metre lettable area, a mixed-user mall that will comprise a retail centre on 5.7 acres and 270 housing units called the Pedestrian Boulevard with servant quarters.
The mall’s commercial centre will have shops, a hospital, restaurants, conference facilities, cinema and casino and rehabilitated riparian land. It will have three secure entrances with a parking space for 700 vehicles on the lower ground level and upper ground parking deck.
The pension scheme has more than 4,900 members, who apart from investing in Crystal Rivers, are also undertaking another real estate venture in Mandharini, an award-winning luxury development in Kilifi County.
Crystal Rivers mall and a residential housing project is situated on Mombasa Road and is only 1.2 kilomtres past the Athi River Interchange.

“The investment also aims to diversify our pension scheme’s investments and give our members good returns, while at the same time giving the public a chance to own some great real estate,” Safaricom chief executive Bob Collymore said.
He said the project will contribute significantly to the economic growth of Machakos County, which, he said, has proved to be a leader in development following implementation of devolution.”
